Curiosity as a seed for change

risk advisory

I guess I would classify myself as a learner.

But not the academic kind.

The trial-and-error kind. The I-have-stared-deeply-at-this-situation-and-I-think-this-will-work-so-let’s-have-a-go kind.

But before I try, I am also the uncomfortable-with-looking-stupid kind. The get-all-the-data-I-can kind.

And just after I try, I am the I-should-have-seen-that-coming kind. I can also be the that-worked-better-than-I-had-hoped kind.

And after a bit of reflection, I become the next-time-I-will-tackle-that-with-more-consciousness/kindness/caution kind.

So I guess that means I am a learner through application, whether that led to the outcome I had wanted or not. And from applied learning comes change. For myself and hopefully, for my clients.

This week I learned a lot. As a risk professional, I believe deeply in a curious mind. In purposeful consideration of options. In taking steps forward with good intent and sound reasoning. So for me, the fundamental capability of this profession is … curiosity and learning.

Here are some of my (current) favourite quotes about learning:

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.
— Albert Einstein
Be curious, not judgemental.
— Ted Lasso, quoting Walt Whitman
Don’t look at your feet to see if you are doing it right. Just dance.
— Anne Lamott
It is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view.
— George Eliot
I think, at a child’s birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift would be curiosity.
— Eleanor Roosevelt.
